USHAS is the latter.

Built on the respected Doug Peterson-designed offshore platform and later professionally extended by Hinckley Yachts to approximately 51 ft (15.5 m), USHAS combines the proven offshore characteristics of the original design with a longer effective waterline and a comprehensive 2025 systems modernization.

The professionally engineered stern extension incorporated full honeycomb composite decking, replacing the original teak decks while creating exceptional aft deck space, increased storage, and a durable, low-maintenance deck structure. The result is believed to be a unique Peterson/Formosa—the only known professionally extended example of its kind.

Originally launched in 1978, USHAS has benefited from careful ownership and continuous investment throughout her life. We are only the third owners, and each owner has contributed to maintaining and improving the vessel. During our ownership, the focus shifted toward creating a dependable, energy-independent offshore cruising yacht capable of extended liveaboard use and serious offshore passagemaking.

Rather than focusing on cosmetic restoration, the refit prioritized the systems that matter most to experienced offshore sailors: reliability, energy independence, safety, and ease of maintenance.

A documented professional yard period completed in 2025 at RAM Marina, Río Dulce included hull and deck refinishing, fresh gelcoat restoration, Awlgrip detailing, complete bottom inspection and antifouling service, Victron/Epoch lithium integration, charging and electrical modernization, running rigging renewal, cutless bearing replacement, systems integration, and numerous additional infrastructure improvements. Documentation and invoices are available.

Today, the major structural, mechanical, electrical, and charging infrastructure has already been completed, allowing the next owner to spend their time cruising rather than undertaking a major refit.

USHAS is fully operational, actively cruising, and currently located in the well-known cruising harbor of Luperón, Dominican Republic, approximately one hour from Puerto Plata International Airport. Subject to timing, owner-assisted delivery toward Florida, Puerto Rico, the USVI/BVI, St. Martin, or Grenada may be available.
