The multihull is not a modern invention. Polynesians relied on multihulls in the form of outrigger canoes. Today, the modern multihull is found in two forms: the trimaran and the catamaran. A catamaran consists of two hulls connected to each other. On larger models, the living area is located in the two hulls and in a cabin structure between them. A trimaran has three hulls, and usually only the center hull is habitable; the two outer hulls serve only for stability. Catamarans and trimarans are used both for recreational boating and in racing. A key advantage of catamarans and trimarans is their heel-free motion under way. A drawback of multihulls is the double berthing fees due to their beam. To address this, some models for multihull enthusiasts allow the hulls to be brought together or folded when in port. However, such designs remain the exception and are unlikely to become widespread.
