What is a sloop?
They used to be pure utility boats – today sloops and launches are sought-after leisure boats for lovers of the unusual. Known in the Netherlands as "Sloep", these open "workhorses" among the boats in large and smaller harbors were originally designed for cargo of all kinds that had to be moved over short distances within the harbor and unloaded again right away. They shaped the scene in major harbors such as Hamburg, Rotterdam or Bremen until the late 1950s.
Sloops are usually double-enders and were fitted with inboard diesel engines. Their German name, "Tuckerboot", clearly comes from the leisurely chugging and bubbling of the engine cooling water that is pumped out through the exhaust while underway.
Sloops are popular day-trip boats
Today, sloops and launches are popular day-trip boats. The boats, made of wood or steel, are usually lovingly restored down to the last detail and often family-owned for generations. Originals and classics are hard to find on the used market – and if you do come across one, don't hesitate. Over the past decades, some shipyards have specialized in building new sloops in classic design.
Sloops, sloepen and launches are often found at maritime museums or at the jetties of classic boat owners' associations. There is hardly any other powerboat that lets you enjoy a truly stylish retro/vintage trip up the river, to the next harbor or to an idyllic anchorage.
