Power catamaran

Power catamaran

They're considered a boat type with a bright future, because they meet the key demands of a modern watersports industry: power catamarans use fewer resources, sit more steadily in the water and are significantly faster than monohulls.

What are power catamarans?

Quite simply – power catamarans are boats and ships that are built on the catamaran principle and driven by engine power.
Because catamarans, by design, displace less and have less wetted surface to overcome than monohull boats, yachts and ships of the same size, the main arguments for applying the catamaran principle to powerboats and ships are a higher top speed, faster daily runs or fuel savings. Ideally, all three advantages are achieved on two hulls.

The advantages of the catamaran principle

Motor yachts designed as catamarans are becoming increasingly popular among watersports fans. Until now, these yachts have occupied "niches" as expedition yachts or houseboats, but more and more powerboat fans – and with them the shipyards – are discovering the advantages of the catamaran principle. In addition to the energy efficiency and higher speed potential already mentioned, these include a calmer ride in rough seas and a shallow draft. This makes it possible to explore shallow bays and waters that would be almost impassable for classic displacement boats of comparable size.
Many owners of power catamarans appreciate the generously sized living areas made possible by the great beam of these yachts.
These arguments and the desire for something out of the ordinary also make power catamarans ideal for the luxury and even superyacht segments.

Power catamarans are seen as a watersports segment with a future

In commercial shipping, such as small and large ferry operations, power catamarans have long been established. Catamaran designs are also enjoying success in powerboat racing. Even today it holds true: anyone who buys one of the (still rare) power catamaran yachts on the used market is investing in a watersports segment with a future.

Who should buy a power catamaran?

Power catamarans are just right for you if you

  • like out-of-the-ordinary boats
  • want a slightly different way of getting around on the water
  • want to reach your destination faster than most other powerboats
  • appreciate a calmer ride on the water
  • want more space on board than in "ordinary" monohull boats
