Fishing boat
In theory – and within limits in practice too – you can fish from just about any boat. But it's only with the right equipment and a purpose-built boat design that the "big ones" reliably end up on the hook.

What is a fishing boat?
While just about any powerboat can also be used for fishing, some shipyards offer models designed specifically for the job. A dedicated fishing boat comes with rod holders, and its cockpit is laid out so that the angler can lean comfortably against the hull with their legs. Depending on the equipment, these boats also have special storage lockers that can be flooded to keep live fish.
Fishing boats with two engines
Fishing boats are often fitted with two engines. The main engine brings the boat to the fishing grounds, even over longer distances. The second engine, usually a small outboard, pushes the boat slowly across the fishing grounds – in what's known as trawling speed – for net fishing or trolling with spoon lures, quietly and at low speed.
For sport fishing, electric outboard motors have proven to be an almost perfect form of propulsion. They are whisper-quiet, environmentally friendly and unaffected by restricted zones (for combustion engines).
Who should buy a fishing boat?
You should get yourself a fishing boat if …
- fishing really is your great passion
- you don't want to settle for half measures when you're out on the water fishing
