Cranchi

One and a half centuries of innovative, high-quality boatbuilding – Cranchi is an icon of the Italian watersports industry. At Boat24 you can buy yachts from the Cranchi famiglia. More than 150 years of boatbuilding experience are hard to beat!

The Cranchi shipyard has been as much a part of Italy for 150 years as Parmesan on pasta. Today the yard operates as a public limited company and builds boats in every size class up to 50 feet and beyond at four plants.

In Italy, the history of the Cranchi shipyard is often cited as a prime example of a family business – it is even taught in schools.
From the very beginning to the present day, the name Cranchi has stood for the finest boatbuilding craftsmanship, even though (or precisely because) "la Famiglia" Cranchi are very much among the pioneers of series boat production.

Iconic design, innovative engineering, Italian temperament

To understand why Cranchi became something of a legend in water sports so early on, it is best to look at the individual stages in the yard's 150-year history.
1870: After Giovanni Cranchi had already spent four years building one-off boats on Lake Como in northern Italy, the boatbuilder founded his first yard that year. As was customary back then, the family name had to serve as the label – a stroke of luck for what would later be called a "catchy brand image".

From generation to generation

Two generations later, the Cranchis – grandsons of the founder – opened a yard in Brienno, also on Lake Como. On the considerably larger site, they became one of the first yards in Europe to start series production of wooden powerboats. In 1970, Aldo Cranchi – the 4th generation of the famiglia – moved production to Piantedo (Lago di Como), where much larger production areas and correspondingly higher capacities were created. In 1974, the 1,000th Cranchi yacht left the yard's halls.

From then on, series boatbuilding mainly relied on GRP and other modern composites. Over the following years, a state-of-the-art yard for series boat production grew on 140,000 m², with technology modeled on the automotive industry. The initially open sport boats for day trips on the lakes of northern Italy evolved into day cruisers, cabin cruisers and even full-size motor yachts for offshore use.
In 1997, a marine test center opened in San Giorgio di Nogaro in Friuli/Veneto: 3,000 m² of dock for on-water testing of the entire Cranchi fleet.
In 2009, Cranchi expanded its production capacities in Piantedo for building water sports boats and yachts with the highest degree of automation worldwide. The assembly lines of the new plant allow mass production of yachts up to 78 feet in length.

Standing behind a good name – on every boat

In 2020, Cranchi celebrated its 150th anniversary. One and a half centuries in which the yard became the state of the art in the series production of exclusive, top-quality powerboats. And when the Cranchis, now in the sixth generation, say that it is not for nothing that they put their name behind every boat, it sounds like a promise for the future.
