Say Ferretti and you're saying: luxury, elegant lines, high tech and style. Basta! Whether you have the motor yachts of the same name in mind or the entire Ferretti Group – in powerboat circles the brand is what Ferrari, Lamborghini and Jaguar are to car lovers: the ultimate. No more, no less.

Yet it all began so modestly for the premium motor yacht brand. The Ferretti yard was founded in 1968. Back then, the Ferretti brothers represented the American powerboat yard Chris Craft and marketed its distinctly fashionable powerboats on the Italian market: Ferretti Nautica was born.
stile italiano
But as so often in watersports circles, the two Ferrettis had one or two suggestions for changes to the design of the boats from the USA, to technical details, or simply to the object as such. What they missed was that "certain something", or quite simply: the Italian style – lo stile italiano.
As early as 1971, the Ferrettis built a 10-meter motorsailer "on their own account" and "under their own label". When the first motor yachts left the Ferretti yard ten years later and immediately sold like hot cakes, it quickly became clear: the fast flybridge motor yachts in particular held enormous potential on a luxury and power scale with no upper limit.
A potential that was literally fueled by the talent of founder Norberto Ferretti. Because Norberto was a gifted powerboat racer who claimed the world championship title in 1994 and 1997. With his know-how and his nose for the extraordinary, the yard quickly won the hearts of all those for whom money plays a rather secondary role, thanks to its exceptional yachts.
Racing to success
The sporting successes and a significantly expanded model range paved the way for the group's internationalization. In 1993, Ferretti of America Inc. was founded to sell motor yachts in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela and the Caribbean. Ferretti of America joined an already existing network operating in Greece, France, Spain, Germany and Great Britain. And it helped to boost sales on the international market.
During this period, the yard began to specialize in semi-custom yachts. Above all, luxuriously appointed flybridge yachts (between 28 and 40 meters in length) in the rather higher price segment caused a sensation in the scene.
In the late 1990s, the company switched to a risky but promising strategy. When investors acquired part of the capital, Ferretti turned to external expansion by specifically buying up boat builders specializing in top-class motor yachts.
A conglomerate of expertise and class
In 1998, for example, the Italian shipyard CNA Srl (Cantieri Navali dell'Adriatico) joined the conglomerate, bringing with it the prestigious Pershing brand, which specialized in open motor yachts.
In 1999, the group acquired CRN SpA, which had specialized in building maxi and mega yachts with a length of over 30 meters, built from composite materials with steel hulls and aluminum superstructures.
And finally the prestige highlight: in 2000, Ferretti acquired 100 % of the share capital of Riva SpA, arguably the most famous and most exclusive shipyard in the world. By then, however, it had lost some of its shine and was now given a fresh "polish" by the Ferrettis.
More space for more yachts
In May 2001, the parent company Ferretti SpA bought various assets of the Oram shipyard in La Spezia, where Riva set up its new production facilities.
In November of the same year, the Ferretti Group completed the takeover of Mochi Craft Srl, based in Pesaro.
Diesse Arredamenti (nautical interiors), Cantiere Navale Mario Morini in Ancona, Pinmar SL (yacht painting) and many others followed.
In short: Ferretti, or rather the Ferretti Group, became arguably the most capable and most successful shipyard group for luxury yachts and superyachts. In early 2012, the Chinese Weichai Holding Group, a subsidiary of Shandong Heavy Industry, acquired a 75 percent stake in the Ferretti Group for 374 million euros.
In April 2016, F Investments S.A., a company owned by Ferrari heir Piero Ferrari, acquired 13.2 % of the Ferretti Group. In 2018, the group generated 680 million euros in revenue.
