Two definitions of classic sailboats
Two definitions of classic sailboats and sailing yachts have become established on the scene:
- All sailboats and sailing yachts built before 1970 whose hull is made of wood, steel or aluminum. These classics should be preserved in as original a condition as possible. Only safety equipment and sometimes electronics and sails should/may come from current/modern production. The classics among sailboats and sailing yachts can be custom one-offs or come from series production.
- Sailboats and sailing yachts that have a recognizable traditional value, an acknowledged high or innovative quality of boatbuilding and that may have had an innovative influence on subsequent generations. In addition to wood, steel and aluminum, this definition also accepts plastics as building materials. Early models from large-scale GRP production runs, for example, can therefore quite rightly be called classics.
Most owners of classic sailing yachts and sailboats have joined special associations or clubs. These organize joint outings, prestigious regattas and awards for particularly well-preserved or original classics.
High maintenance effort
The care and preservation of classic sailboats and sailing yachts are generally considered demanding and time-consuming. But the results are usually a real feast for the eyes. Sailing on classic yachts and boats is also described as the purest, most original form of water sports. On the scene, everyone agrees: once you've caught the "classic bug", you'll never get rid of it!
Who should buy a classic sailing yacht?
Are you the classic type? Go for a classic if
- you generally feel more drawn to the old than the new
- you don't equate classic with outdated
- you have a knack for wood and its restoration and care
- beauty matters more to you than low maintenance
