Classic powerboats

A classic is a classic! Or is it? There are small but important differences compared to boats that are simply "old". Find out more about the criteria, the materials used in construction, and why some classics are more classic than others.

When is a powerboat a classic?

When is a powerboat a classic? Here, too, a distinction has to be made between the purely theoretical definition of the term and the way it is used in everyday language.
The term classic is often applied to landmark designs and craftsmanship that are considered especially well-proportioned and harmonious. In that sense, even a modern, recently built boat with avant-garde lines, for example, could be a classic – or become one.

Classic classics

With powerboats, however, a certain age is usually part of the equation as well. Riva boats from the sixties, for instance, are the "classic classics" – even though plenty of older and no less elegant powerboats have survived to this day. And are likewise referred to as "classics".
Classic powerboats are usually cared for lovingly by their owners and stand out for an at times meticulous attention to detail in keeping with their original condition.
Once-expensive one-offs and custom builds, but also boats from series production, can equally earn the status of a classic.

Typical materials for the classics: wood

The typical building materials for the classics among powerboats are wood and steel. As in the car world, keeping the original engine in a classic powerboat is considered a particular challenge. For its servicing and repair, but also for replacing entire engine components, there are now renowned yards and boatbuilding workshops that take on even complex restoration work.

Classic powerboats are often defined by the following criteria:

Classic powerboats are often defined by the following criteria: recognition well beyond their home region at the time of production, a traditional value that is now clearly recognizable, high quality of boatbuilding craftsmanship, a certain innovative potential at the time they were created, and an influence on the generations of powerboats that followed.

In everyday language, ALL boats built before the 1970s are also referred to as classics.

Who should buy a classic powerboat?

Classic powerboats are just right for you if you …

  • love vintage styling and old-school engineering
  • are the type who enjoys getting hands-on
  • take pleasure in caring for a boat
  • don't always need the very latest gear on board
  • see a deeper meaning in preserving the tried and tested in its original condition
