Van de Stadt Zeebonk – steel sailing yacht with seaworthy qualities
The 1982 Van de Stadt Zeebonk is a steel sailing yacht designed with safety, stability and seaworthiness as key principles. This vessel was built under licence from the renowned yacht designer Van de Stadt and constructed by Hesling Construction Company in Dieren. The hull is steel with a wooden superstructure, contributing to a low centre of gravity and favourable weight distribution. The long keel, filled with approximately 1,500 kg of lead, provides additional stability and makes the yacht suitable for a wide range of cruising areas, from inland waterways to coastal waters and the open sea.
This Van de Stadt Zeebonk is now in the online auction. Anyone can bid up to and including 22 June 2026.
Robust construction and well-thought-out design
The Zeebonk is built using the hard-chine principle, resulting in a strong and stiff hull. The structure is reinforced with frames and stringers, improving overall structural integrity. The keel not only functions as a stabiliser, but also houses the integrated 160-litre fuel tank. The yacht has an air draft of 13 metres and a draught of 1.40 metres, making it suitable for both shallower waters and longer passages offshore.
The steering system consists of a wheel linked to a single balanced rudder. This combination provides precise control, even in heavier weather conditions. The boat is fitted with a heavier mast and standing rigging, tailored to the owner’s requirements and supported by modified construction drawings from Van de Stadt. This makes the vessel suitable for sporty sailing as well as longer voyages.
Sail plan and deck equipment
The sail plan includes a mainsail with full-length battens and a triple reefing system, a genoa on a roller furling system, and a cruising chute for lighter wind conditions. All sail handling can be done from the cockpit, enhancing safety and comfort on board. The cockpit is self-draining and features a high bridgedeck, offering extra protection in rough seas.
On deck, the boat is equipped with a teak deck, sprayhood, pulpit and pushpit, a cockpit table, and a crane (hoist) for lifting a dinghy or equipment. The swim ladder and bathing platform make boarding from the water easy. Two anchors with chain and line provide sufficient security when anchoring.
Interior and onboard comfort
Inside, the Zeebonk offers 1.85 metres of headroom and sleeping accommodation for five people, including three permanent berths. The layout includes a dinette, a galley with stove, oven and refrigerator, and a manual toilet. The water tank has a capacity of 120 litres. Although there is no fixed heating system, the interior provides adequate shelter for multi-day trips.
The electrical system includes a battery charger, alternator, inverter, shore power connection, solar panel and voltmeter. Navigation equipment includes, among other things, an autopilot, GPS, depth sounder, log/speedometer and compass. Onboard voltage is 12V.
Engine and performance
The boat is powered by a Volvo Penta MD11C diesel engine producing 23 hp. This two-cylinder engine is electrically started and is in working condition. The combination of engine power and sail plan makes the Zeebonk suitable for both motoring and sailing, depending on conditions.
Sailing experience and possibilities
The Van de Stadt Zeebonk is designed for versatile use. Whether for day trips, sporty sailing, weekend getaways or longer holidays, this vessel provides a solid platform for a wide range of cruising plans. The current owner has sailed the boat in Danish waters, among other areas, which demonstrates its seaworthiness and comfort on longer journeys.
Thanks to its stable handling, balanced rudder and long keel, the Zeebonk is particularly suitable for sailors who value control and safety, even in changing weather conditions. The boat is supplied with various extras, including a dinghy, GPS steering at the wheel, and a cradle for storage ashore.
This Van de Stadt Zeebonk offers a solid foundation for anyone looking for a characterful steel sailing yacht with proven sailing qualities and functional equipment.
