How did that saying go again? Small yards building semi-custom boats no longer stand a chance of survival these days? The Sirius yard in Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, proves the opposite. And it has been doing so since 1971 – that was when Peter Schmidt founded the family business; since the turn of the millennium, his son Torsten has been running the yard.
A niche successfully occupied
As in other industries, smaller companies tend to survive the competition with the really big players by occupying a niche. At Sirius, that factor is called: deck saloon.
The long-established yard can claim without exaggeration that it brought the first boats with the distinctive saloon at deck level onto the market.
Over the years, Sirius yachts have remained true to the original principle of the deck saloon yacht: it's all about space, excellent all-round visibility and, of course, that certain "something extra" in terms of comfort. Sirius also pulls off the "feat" of making yachts that by their very nature (and definition) look somewhat ponderous genuinely fast. In short: if it's a deck saloon, then it's a Sirius.
Individualized concepts
Eighty employees at Sirius produce around a dozen yachts in various sizes per year. The family business builds an "individualized small series" based on a model range with three length categories.
Since the yard was founded, around 800 boats have been delivered (as of 2022).
Every Sirius is adapted to the specific wishes of its future owner. The yard advertises the fact that no two yachts leaving the Plön facility are identical.
The current model range (all designs by Marc-Oliver von Ahlen) consists of the base lengths 31, 35 and 40 feet (as of 2022)
Up to 14 different layouts
The "small" 310 DS has been and remains particularly successful: 14 different layouts are available for this deck saloon yacht, all with a raised saloon. And as with all Sirius yachts, the interior is of course built entirely to the owner's wishes.
This individual concept also makes Sirius yachts in all size classes interesting for the used boat market. To put it another way: if a Sirius yacht is offered used, you can assume that buyers will be found immediately. No ifs, ands or buts.
