Bella

Bella didn't reinvent Scandinavian powerboat building, but it has shaped it significantly over many years. The yard consistently focused on functionality, solid construction and sensible solutions rather than short-lived fashion trends. That's exactly why many Bella boats still enjoy an excellent reputation years after production ended.

From family business to market leader

The story of Bella begins in 1970, when Raimo Sonninen founded the yard in Kuopio in western Finland. In its very first years, Bella focused on compact leisure boats for Finland's countless lakes. Within just a few decades, the small family business grew into one of Scandinavia's largest sport boat manufacturers. The Flipper, Aquador and Falcon brands were added later, turning Bella Marine into one of Northern Europe's most important boatbuilding companies.

Four brands under one roof

An important step came in the early 2000s with the development of a multi-brand strategy. While Bella served the all-round leisure segment, Flipper was aimed more at sporty drivers, Aquador at the upmarket cruiser segment and Falcon at rugged aluminum boats. This allowed the yard to cover virtually the entire market for compact to mid-size powerboats without letting the individual brands compete against each other.

Scandinavian engineering instead of Mediterranean show

Bella boats follow a different philosophy from many southern European motor yachts. The yard developed its models first and foremost for changeable weather, cooler temperatures and demanding coastal waters. High freeboards, safe walkways, well-protected helm stations and functional interiors are therefore usually more important than spectacular design gimmicks. At first glance, many Bella models look rather sober – and that is exactly what many owners still appreciate today.

Cabin boats with genuine practical value

Bella became particularly well known for its compact cabin boats between roughly six and nine meters in length. Series such as the Bella 620, 652, 700, 703, 765, 800 and 9000 were among the yard's best-known models for years. A consistent hallmark was their efficient use of space. Many expert tests highlighted just how much living and storage space Bella managed to fit into comparatively compact hulls.

Outboard and sterndrive – depending on the intended use

Technically, Bella has always been versatile. Smaller models were mainly offered with outboard motors, while larger cabin boats often came with inboard engines and a sterndrive. Engines from Yamaha, Mercury, Honda, Volvo Penta and MerCruiser were especially common. Depending on boat size, power ranged from around 40 hp on smaller leisure boats to over 300 hp on the larger cruiser models.

Engineering with the North in mind

Bella consistently developed its boats for Nordic waters. Large window areas improve all-round visibility in bad weather, wide side decks make it easier to work on board, and comparatively steep windshields reduce reflections. Added to this are deep planing hulls designed to deliver forgiving handling even in choppy seas. You won't find revolutionary individual innovations at Bella, but the boats often impress with their well-balanced overall design.

Breaks in the shipyard's history

Like many European boatbuilders, Bella was not spared economic change. After several changes of ownership, Bella Marine eventually became part of the Nimbus Group. The Bella brand then increasingly faded into the background, while Flipper, Aquador and Falcon were expanded more strongly. On the used boat market, however, Bella remains extremely present to this day – not least because of the high production numbers and the robust construction of many models.
