Sailing superyacht
"Give me the luxuries of life and I will willingly do without the necessities!" With this quote from Oscar Wilde, pretty much everything essential about superyachts has been said. Because nowhere else is it so explicitly about luxury, maximum comfort, pomp and glory.

What is a sailing superyacht?
Superyachts are sailing yachts measuring roughly 25 to 60 meters in length. Megayachts under sail are at least 60 meters long and currently reach a maximum of 142 meters.
Sailing super- and megayachts are fitted with every imaginable form of luxury and comfort. From helicopter landing decks to swimming pools, owner's apartments with terraces and garages for tenders and submarines, there are in principle no limits for their fortunate owners. Provided, of course, they have the necessary funds at hand: construction costs are estimated at around 1 to 1.5 million euros per meter of hull length. Maintaining such yachts is also extremely costly. Depending on the berth, cruising area and crew size, several million euros per year are due here as well.
The longest sailing megayachts
The list of the longest sailing yachts is headed by the «SY A». Designed by Philippe Starck and owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko, she is 142.8 meters long and was built at the German shipyard Nobiskrug. On her three-hundred-meter masts, the «SY A» can set a staggering 4,500 sq m of sail area. Some rankings, however, no longer list the «A» as a sailing yacht, since she was certified by Lloyd's as a «motor yacht with sail assistance».
The «Black Pearl», currently listed as the second-largest sailing yacht, is 106.8 meters long and was likewise designed as a three-master, whose unstayed masts automatically adjust the maximum 2,877 sq m of sail area to the optimal angle to the wind direction. A total of 15 sails bring this megayacht to a top speed of 30 knots without engine assistance. In future, the sails are to be fitted with solar panels to enable largely emission-free cruises.
Who should buy a sailing superyacht?
You should only consider a superyacht if you …
- have enough spare cash for annual running costs in the millions
- have enough friends who are happy to enjoy all that luxury with you
- aren't aiming to win any environmental awards, because superyachts are known for their high resource consumption
- have nothing against staff or crew – because a superyacht without service personnel simply isn't an option!
