What is a center cockpit yacht
The golden mean – in sailing, too, this old saying definitely has its merits. Because alongside the common aft-cockpit sailing yachts that are in demand in most parts of the world, yachts with a center cockpit have been winning over more and more fans among bluewater cruisers for decades now.
It's a bit like the chicken and the egg: which came first? Was it the idea that a center cockpit, usually positioned relatively high on modern yachts, allows you to sail relatively dry? And that the center cockpit therefore offers a good overview of what's happening on board? Or were sailors and crews prone to seasickness the reason? Because the closer the cockpit is to the middle of the boat, the calmer the boat's movements feel to the sailors sitting in it.
This calm center – comparable to the greatly reduced movement in the middle of a seesaw – can be an effective help in avoiding seasickness on board … even if it is no guarantee.
Center cockpit yachts from Scandinavia
Over the past few decades, center cockpit yachts have mainly been built at Scandinavian yards. Brands such as Hallberg Rassy reached a true "state of the art" level. Center cockpit yachts are available as single-masted or two-masted boats.
Advantages and disadvantages of a center cockpit yacht
- The cockpit is a calmer place to be in a seaway (seesaw effect) – recommended for crews prone to seasickness
- The high seating position provides a better overview
- More room for an aft cabin
- On (generally longer) yachts with NO coachroof forward of the center cockpit, the center cockpit fills with water faster than an aft cockpit when a wave comes over
- If the waves hit a boat with a center cockpit from the side, the higher position of the center cockpit can create a stronger sense of rolling (seasickness)
