Flat-bottomed boat
Looks cozy, but has another side too: flat-bottomed boats are popular charter boats for sailors with a taste for tradition, yet they are also pushed hard in regattas with dozens of participants. A winning design for canals, lakes, tidal flats and much (sea) more!

What is a flat-bottomed boat?
Flat-bottomed boats are shallow-draft vessels with minimal draft, making them particularly well suited to the Wadden Sea (North Sea, Dutch lakes such as the IJsselmeer, and the English Channel). Thanks to their flat keel, they can sit safely on the seabed at low tide. A characteristic feature of flat-bottomed boats – which are still sailed especially frequently in the Netherlands – are their relatively large, hinged leeboards. Length between 8.50 m and 30 m, with up to three masts.
From cargo sailer to floating home and regatta racer
Flat-bottomed boats were once used as cargo sailers and are popular charter boats today. In addition to day trips or weekend incentive cruises, these surprisingly agile sailing boats and ships are also used in regattas. Some (smaller) flat-bottomed boats are lovingly restored and maintained by private owners. In the Netherlands in particular, flat-bottomed boats are also popular as houseboats or floating houses along the banks of the canals and the IJsselmeer.
Who should buy a flat-bottomed boat?
Flat-bottomed boats might be exactly the right type of boat for you if you...
- have a soft spot for traditional seafaring
- want to explore the Wadden Sea with family and/or friends
- are planning a longer cruise or stay in the canals and lakes of the Netherlands
- want to sail in waters with a large tidal range and dry out at low tide
- would like to convert an extraordinary boat into a houseboat or floating house
