Dinghy cruiser
The dinghy cruiser is a stylistic mix of sailing dinghy and cabin cruiser and forms its own boat class or category. Dinghy cruisers come in various sizes (6.50 - 9 m) with correspondingly varied space below deck. Since the 1950s, dinghy cruisers have been popular as cruising and racing boats along the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts as well as on European inland waters.

What is a dinghy cruiser?
What's that supposed to be? A genuine sailing dinghy with a retractable centerboard that also features a cabin? And not just a cuddy for sails and bags, but enough room for a far from spartan living space under sail.
Dinghy cruiser – a cross between a sailing dinghy and a cabin cruiser
The dinghy cruiser really is a successful "cross" between a sailing dinghy and a cabin cruiser, created in the 1950s mainly for cruising on large inland lakes and along the Baltic and North Sea coasts.
The different classes (development class)
Dinghy cruisers come in various classes (usually as a development class) or lengths: from the 15 dinghy cruiser (15 sq m of sail area in the so-called silhouette measurement, with the actual upwind sail area being considerably larger; 6.50 m length) and the 20 (7.75 m length) to the 30 (9 m length).
Dinghy cruisers are still built from wood today (early versions in solid wood, later boats in plywood). They are now also available in steel, GRP and wood/GRP versions.
Dinghy cruisers look great and sail fast
These elegant boats – especially the wooden versions, among which you'll find real gems – can be sailed extremely fast. That's why the first regattas in the individual classes were held in the 1970s. Dinghy cruisers have since established themselves as a serious racing development class that has produced sailors at the highest level. Championships with 30-40 competing boats are not uncommon.
The P-boat (15 dinghy cruiser) in particular is well known and popular as a highly technical racing class with fascinatingly fast boats.

Who should buy a dinghy cruiser?
A dinghy cruiser could be right for you if you
- appreciate the agility of a sailing dinghy but also want to take longer trips on inland lakes and along the coast;
- are an ambitious inland sailor who doesn't want to give up a certain level of comfort;
- want to move up from a sailing dinghy to a small cabin cruiser that is just as sporty;
- value excellent sailing characteristics combined with an elegant design;
- want to be out on the water in a way that is both sporty and comfortable.
