Offshore boat
From goosebumps to a pounding heart – offshore boats are Formula 1, the Paris-Dakar Rally and the 24 Hours of Le Mans rolled into one, out on the water. Anyone who has ever sat in one of these machines and blasted across the sea with engines roaring will never forget it. For speed fans only!

What are offshore boats?
Goosebumps! That's exactly what 99.9 percent of all tech-savvy powerboaters get when they hear the deep rumble of a large-displacement V8 or nine-liter engine. And those goosebumps usually turn into heart palpitations when you open up the throttle on a power or offshore racer with roaring engines and blast across the water at 160 km/h.
Quite apart from the fact that this kind of speeding is not entirely without risk, such high-performance machines polarize even the powerboating scene. For some, offshore boats are a pointless waste of resources – gas guzzlers, in plain language – that drag down the image of all powerboaters. Others see offshore boats and powerboats as avant-garde engineering and design with a high emotional charge.
High fuel consumption
But of course there are also powerboat owners who show consideration for their environment and travel at walking – sorry, swimming – pace at least near shore or in harbors, significantly reducing the noise level. On top of that, high fuel consumption only applies in racing mode or at top speed. "Normal" outings – and yes, those are possible with V8 engines underneath you – apparently use fuel in much the same range as other powerboats.
Well-known brands include Cigarette (nomen est omen!), Sunseeker, Donzi and Marine Technology. Many offshore boats and powerboats are built as custom boats in small, specialized yards.
Shaped like a cigar
Offshore boats and powerboats are around 10 to 13 meters long and often really do have the shape of a cigar or cigarette (hence the nicknames). These boats are tuned exclusively for speed, are fitted "only" with a cockpit and usually offer no comfort at all below deck.
Offshore can also mean something else
Another use of the term "offshore boat": in some countries it also refers to powerboats that can cover longer distances at sea – literally off shore.
Who should buy an offshore boat?
Offshore boats are exactly the right "toy" for you if …
- you need speed, speed and more speed
- roaring engines sound like heaven to your ears
- you have enough spare cash to fill up enormous tanks
- engines and their inner workings are no mystery to you
