Work boat
They are the workhorses among watercraft: without multi-purpose or utility boats, many rescue and relief organizations, disaster response agencies and fire services would be lost.

What are utility boats?
Utility boats are also known as multi-purpose boats. Taken together, both terms say almost everything about how these motorized craft are used: they are operated by professionals and usually face tough conditions in their daily work. Police, fire services, water rescue organizations, civil protection agencies and other emergency and relief services are the "classic" users of utility or multi-purpose boats. Depending on the particular version and equipment, these consistently functional boats can handle almost any task in technical operations and rescue services – whether on inland waters or along the coast.
Utility boat characteristics
Utility or multi-purpose boats are between five and 16 m long, but no wider than 2.50 m – so they still fit on a trailer and are approved for road transport. Because of the tough conditions they operate in, many utility boats are built with an aluminum hull, they are open and designed as semi-displacement craft. For propulsion, powerful outboards or reliable diesel engines with up to 350 hp are usually mounted or installed.
Equipped for every purpose
What makes utility boats special, however, is their specific equipment, tailored to each intended use. Boats operated by rescue organizations, for example, are often fitted with an electrohydraulic or manually operated bow door. This makes picking up and rescuing people from the water considerably safer and easier. It also allows people in wheelchairs to get on board more easily. Bulky technical material can be loaded more easily as well.
In everyday language, boats and ships such as tugs, ferries and sea rescue vessels are sometimes also referred to as utility boats.
