Berth

Where do I put my boat, where does my yacht wait for me? Depending on boat size and boat category, yachts and boats usually have a home of their own. Whether at a jetty in the water or in a boat yard on land – every boat needs its berth! We know the differences, and at Boat24 you'll find what you're looking for!

The different berth types

Boats and yachts usually have a boat berth. The exception are trailer boats, which are stored exclusively on a trailer.
Berths are assigned according to boat type. Dinghies or smaller powerboats are kept on land at clubs and water sports marinas, as they can be launched and retrieved via a slipway. In addition, dinghy hulls are usually not coated with antifouling (which is required for in-water berths).
Larger boats or yachts lie in an in-water berth in the harbor (with dock access) or on a buoy (mainly off your club grounds or harbor).

Boat berth, harbor berth or dry berths

Often the boat berth is offered as a combined harbor berth. During the season the boat lies in the water at its berth, and in winter the boat is moved to a storage space on land.
However, there are also boat berths that consist only of a storage space on land. These are mostly dry berths for smaller racing yachts or powerboats, which are lifted from their storage space into the water by crane when needed.
In some larger marinas there are now dry stack facilities for smaller powerboats or small boats (often inflatable boats), where the boats are parked dry, sometimes even by means of a lift system. When needed, the boat owner gives notice a few hours before the desired launch so that the boat can be made ready by the dry stack system.

The berth or boat berth in the water can be either a floating dock or a fixed structure with a quay for protection against the elements. Make sure that your yacht gets an in-water berth suitable for its length and displacement, one that actually protects your boat in unfavorable weather conditions.

Renting or buying

Most harbors offer designated harbor berths for visiting boats. This boat berth is assigned by the harbor master.
Normally the boat berth, berth, harbor berth or storage space is rented by the yacht owner. In private marinas there is also the option of purchasing a boat berth, berth, harbor berth or storage space.
