ABOUT GIB'SEA
Gib’Sea is a well-established French sailing yacht brand with a long tradition of building sturdy, comfortable and seaworthy cruising yachts. The shipyard, Gilbert Marine, was founded in 1972 by Olivier Gibert, who had close ties to the Jeanneau family. This helped Gib’Sea establish itself early on as a quality builder in the French sailing yacht industry, with a focus on practical solutions, good sailing performance and a high level of onboard comfort.
Over several decades, Gib’Sea earned a strong reputation among sailors who value safety, quality and functionality. Its yachts are known for their spacious interiors, robust construction and well-balanced sailing characteristics, making them well suited to both family coastal cruising and longer offshore passages.
In 1996, Gilbert Marine was acquired by Dufour Yachts, one of France’s most respected sailing yacht manufacturers. Several Gib’Sea models therefore continued the tradition associated with two of the most respected names in French yacht building: Jeanneau and Dufour. This has helped Gib’Sea remain a sought-after brand among sailors looking for quality, comfort and excellent value for money.
ABOUT THE GIB'SEA 522
The Gib’Sea 522 is the flagship of the range — an elegant and impressive 52-foot bluewater cruiser designed for comfortable and safe sailing over long distances. With its solid hull, classic lines and well-thought-out design, it embodies many of the qualities that have earned the Gib’Sea name respect among long-distance sailors worldwide.
The yacht combines good sailing performance with a high level of onboard comfort and generous storage capacity. Large water and fuel tanks, spacious cabins and inviting living areas make it suitable both for extended cruising and as a comfortable home for longer periods aboard. Its robust construction and reassuring motion at sea provide a sailing experience that inspires confidence on coastal trips as well as major ocean crossings.
The Gib’Sea 522 was designed by the renowned French naval architects Michel Joubert and Bernard Nivelt and built by Gilbert Marine in France. The model was launched in 1986 and developed as a large, sturdy bluewater cruiser, with an emphasis on seaworthiness, comfort and long-distance sailing. Joubert and Nivelt were responsible for a number of successful Gib’Sea models, and the 522 represents one of the highlights of this period in Gib’Sea’s history.
Joubert and Nivelt were a respected French design partnership based in La Rochelle. They designed a number of well-known sailing yachts and had an extensive working relationship with Gilbert Marine. The 522 was among the largest and most extensively equipped cruising yachts they designed for Gib’Sea.
The current owner has owned the yacht since 2011. There have been three previous owners.
LAYOUT
The Gib’Sea 522 has a very spacious and practical layout, well suited to both long-distance cruising and extended stays aboard. The yacht has five cabins with a total of 10 berths, as well as three bathrooms with showers.
The large saloon offers comfortable seating for around 10 people, with additional seating at the chart table. The spacious and practical galley is well equipped with a three-burner cooker, oven and gas alarm, providing a good working environment even while underway.
SEAKEEPING AND PERFORMANCE
The Gib’Sea 522 is a classic, robust bluewater cruiser designed with comfort and safety on longer passages in mind. Its substantial, well-proportioned hull provides a comfortable motion at sea, along with generous interior space and ample load-carrying capacity.
The combination of size, stability and good sailing characteristics makes the 522 well suited to coastal cruising, extended voyages and ocean crossings.
SAILS AND EQUIPMENT
The yacht comes with a 96 m² genoa and a 54 m² mainsail. This generous sail area provides good potential for efficient performance in moderate winds, while retaining the dependable and predictable sailing characteristics for which the Gib’Sea 522 is known.
The yacht is also equipped with no fewer than 14 winches. Some maintenance, including servicing and lubrication, is recommended. Some of the winches have faults with their self-tailing mechanisms.
The rig was inspected by Southern Cross Spars approximately 10 years ago.
ENGINE
The yacht is powered by an 80 hp Perkins 4.236 diesel engine. This is a proven and robust engine that provides a good power reserve for a yacht of this size, both when manoeuvring in harbour and when motoring over longer distances.
The Perkins 4.236 is known for its reliability and straightforward, well-established design, making it well suited to the type of long-distance cruising for which the Gib’Sea 522 was built.
The engine has been regularly maintained and has recorded 8,051 hours, according to the engine-hour meter.
LOCATION AND VIEWING
The yacht is currently located in Oslo and is ready for viewing and handover.
