After delivery, she entered service under the name Scheepsbouw I. In 1951, she was renamed into Shipdock I, following the continuation of the yard's activities under the name Nederlandsche Droogdok- en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NDSM). The vessel is equipped with a characteristic Kromhout (Gardner) diesel engine, a suitable installation that perfectly matches her historical background.
