Designed and built in 1998 by the French yard JFA, the Petrel 42 belongs to that breed of offshore cruisers built for the sea, with no compromise on strength. A 12.80 m strip-planked hull, three cabins and six berths: a boat for crews who want to go far, for a long time, on a yacht that can take the miles. New mast, boom, rigging in 2019, Sparcraft Performance. French flag, offered at €119,000 incl. VAT.
Build and seakeeping
The strip-planking construction, a hallmark of quality bluewater builds, combines stiffness, insulation and longevity. At 12.80 m LOA, 4.00 m beam and 9,000 kg displacement, the Petrel 42 is a balanced and reassuring platform. A 1.50 m draft opens up shallow anchorages and coastal cruising as readily as long passages. The rig is served by a full sail wardrobe — full-batten mainsail on track and car, genoa, yankee, staysail, storm jib and two spinnakers with socks — with lazy jacks and lazy bag on the boom, backstay, standing and running rigging, and two Harken electric winches for easy short-handed sailing.
Engines and electronics
Propulsion comes from a Yanmar 3GM30F, 27 hp, 3 cylinders, original 1998 (2,950 hours), together with a Yanmar 3YM30F (3,780 hours), shaft drive and Gori three-blade folding propeller. Cruising speed of 6 knots for a stated 2 l/h, 14 knots top speed, with 400 litres of diesel and 700 litres of fresh water: real cruising autonomy. The electronics were completely renewed in 2024 around a B&G suite, backed by a lithium battery bank and two Victron solar panels.
