The 2003 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40, designed by Daniel Andrieu, sits comfortably at the sweet spot of production cruising yachts. Launched during a golden age for the French yard, the SO 40 successfully balances spirited sailing performance with high-volume, comfortable cruising accommodations, making it a persistent favourite on the brokerage market two decades later. Design and Build Quality The SO 40 features a clean, purposeful hull shape with a moderate beam carried well aft, contributing significantly to stability and interior volume. The construction follows standard GRP layup techniques for the era, with a solid hull below the waterline and a cored deck for stiffness and insulation. While not built like a heavy offshore racer, the structure is robust and designed for reliable coastal and medium-distance offshore cruising. Early owners often praised the quality of the teak joinery below, which gives the cabin a warm, inviting feel that rivals newer production boats. Performance Under Sail Jeanneau's commitment to sailing performance is evident in the SO 40. Equipped with a deep, bulbous keel and a fractional sloop rig, the boat performs admirably.
