  • The current owner has owned the boat since spring 2002

Today, the Grand Banks 36 is regarded as an enduring classic, retaining its value remarkably well.
A 1988 Grand Banks 36 Classic represents a highly sought-after year of this legendary trawler. 1988 was a significant year for the model, as the builder, American Marine, introduced a major and long-awaited upgrade to the hull design.
Here are the key features you should know about the 1988 model:

1. THE UPGRADED "WIDE BODY" HULL
Prior to 1988, the Grand Banks 36 had a somewhat narrower hull. In 1988, the hull moulds were redesigned, making the boat approximately 6 inches (15 cm) longer and 4 inches (10 cm) wider.

In practical terms, this provided several advantages:

  • Significantly more interior volume.
  • Wider and safer side decks.
  • Improved stability at sea.

The hull is constructed of solid GRP (fibreglass production began in 1974), with a deep, full-length keel that protects the rudder and propeller while providing excellent directional stability.

2. LAYOUT
The Classic model is renowned for its practical tri-cabin layout, offering excellent privacy for owners, guests and family alike.

  • Aft cabin (Master cabin): The owner's private quarters. Exceptionally spacious for a 36-footer, with its own bathroom and toilet, as well as direct access to the aft deck.
  • Main saloon and galley: Located amidships on the main deck. The saloon features an L-shaped sofa with dining table, a longitudinal galley and the interior helm station. The helm station has its own door providing direct access to the side deck, making docking and manoeuvring particularly convenient.
  • Forward cabin (V-berth): Guest cabin in the bow with two berths and a separate bathroom.
  • Flybridge: Spacious, practical and easily accessible.

3. ENGINE AND FUEL CONSUMPTION
This particular boat was originally delivered with a single-engine installation and conventional shaft drive.
The engine is a 275 hp Ford Lehman, offering a highly economical and reliable solution. The boat cruises comfortably at 7–8 knots, with an impressive fuel consumption of approximately 1.5 litres per nautical mile (equivalent to around 12 litres per hour).
The engine has been regularly serviced, and oil samples have been analysed annually.

ADVANTAGE OF THE FORD LEHMAN 275:
  • Robust and reliable six-cylinder diesel engine.
  • Large displacement of approximately 6 litres.
  • Simple mechanical engine design.
  • Easy to service and well suited to long periods of continuous operation.
  • Traditional marine engine with technical documentation readily available.

A classic diesel engine for those who appreciate solid engineering, straightforward maintenance and traditional marine craftsmanship.

NEW TEAK IN 2022
During the winter of 2022, the boat was kept in Sweden, where new teak was installed on the decks, aft cabin roof, steps, bowsprit and flybridge.

LOCATION AND VIEWING
The boat is currently ashore in Oslo, ready for viewing and handover.
Please feel free to contact us for further information or to arrange a viewing.
