Delphia 11 electric custom upgrade

The Delphia 11 electric "Life" version comes standard with a 50kW Torqeedo electric motor and a 40kW Torqeedo battery, good for approximately 4 hours of autonomy at 9 km/h with a consumption of 9kW.

In addition to this factory system, this 2023 Delphia 11 Sedan has been custom-modified. This upgrade includes: 6 Sunpower Maxeon 430W solar panels, (2) 3.5kW Torqeedo 24V lithium household batteries, a 24/5000 Victron inverter, a Whisperpower Piccolo 10 generator, and a Torqeedo DC/DC converter that connects the high-voltage drive battery to the 24V household batteries.

This comprehensive system provides significantly more autonomy:

The 2.6kW solar panel system fully charges the 7kW lithium household batteries in just a few hours. The large inverter can power all household appliances – air conditioning, heating, water heater, boiler, etc. – without shore power.

Solar energy can also slowly recharge the 40kW propulsion battery via the DC/DC converter when the vessel is moored in the open.

The generator provides virtually unlimited range after approximately 4 hours of fully electric cruising at 8–9 km/h. While cruising, it charges both the high-voltage drive battery and the 7kW household batteries, delivering the necessary 9kW for a cruising speed of 9 km/h.

With a consumption of around 3 litres per hour, this series hybrid solution is much more economical and quieter than a parallel hybrid with both electric and diesel engines (such as the Greenline hybrid yachts), and ideal for low travel speeds.

Instructions for use for optimal performance

Generator

When sailing and your destination is beyond the main battery's range (approximately 4 hours at 9 km/h), it's recommended to turn on the generator when the battery reaches 20–30%, unless your destination is within an hour. This ensures you can continue sailing without any significant loss of battery capacity.

Turn on the Whisperpower generator. Set the current on the Victron panel to 6–8A (to avoid overloading the generator).

In the B&G settings screen, increase the charging capacity to 32A (to make full use of the generator's capacity and the two charge controllers).

You are now making full use of the 10kVA generator to charge both the main drive battery and the smaller lithium household batteries.

You can also use the 24V domestic batteries to charge the large drive battery by lowering the "LV to HV" slider in the advanced settings. This means you'll now also draw from the domestic system to charge the drive. This is especially beneficial on sunny days when the domestic batteries are already full and excess solar energy would otherwise remain unused. Check the status of the domestic batteries via "components" on the B&G screen; at 90-100%, they are almost full.

Go to the 'energy flow' screen to see how much power is being fed into the main propulsion battery. While sailing, the throttle display will show whether energy is being fed into or out of the battery, which indicates the balance between consumption (for sailing) and regeneration (solar, generator, and household batteries combined).

When returning to port: reduce the charging limit in the settings screen to the value of the shore power connection.

Additional adjustment

Finally, an additional helm station was installed on the foredeck of the roof, ideal in good weather. This limited the boat's air draft to 290 cm, while still offering the benefit of a mini flybridge. The owner frequently used this helm station during the warm summer months in France. Because this added benefit isn't ergonomically suitable for every skipper, this mini helm station is included at no extra cost.
