Schooner ‘Mauna Kea’ – History and layout
‘Mauna Kea’ is a very elegant, traditional design bluewater yacht, she was the centre feature of a sailing German TV series. Famous US naval architect Philip Rhodes’s design No. 7451 was used by the German shipyard Turbo Technik Gmbh in Hamburg, aluminium replaced the original wooden construction, a schooner rig replaced the original ketch rig and a long keel replaced the centreboard. The result is a graceful, light and immensely strong hull, complemented by a teak deck. She is usually sailed singlehanded, or x2 person crew, the cockpit layout and schooner rig allows multiple sails combinations, ensuring fast and safe passages in comfort.
Mauna Kea has circumnavigated the globe, it was purchased by its current owner in 2004, it underwent a bare hull refit and upgrade, she was relaunched in 2017.
From stern to bow, the accommodation layout includes:
• Rear lazaret. This is accessed from deck level via a lockable access hatch, it is a large storage volume to accommodate the fisherman sail, drogue, rear anchor, fishing gear etc. The life raft cradle which sits on top of the lazaret hatch hinges backward to allow the launching of the life raft through the stern railing gate.
• Cockpit. There is a lockable locker on each side of the cockpit, for storage of fenders, fender board, sheets, tender engine etc. The helm is at the rear of the cockpit, a Multi-function display and magnetic compass are mounted on a column in front of the helm. A lockable engine panel is located on starboard of the companionway door. x8 self tailing winches for furler, sheets and back stays are located around the cockpit.
• Engine. It is accessed from x4 sides: from a panel behind the companionway ladder, a side panel from the port double cabin, a side panel from the navigator berth on starboard, and a screwed floor panel from the cockpit floor for major overhauls.
• Landing area. The companionway ladder leads to a landing area with a double cabin on port side. This cabin features x3 opening hatches and a large cupboard. On starboard is the navigator berth, the charts table, instruments and radios.
• Galley & bar area. Two steps down is the galley on port side, this includes double sinks with grey water collection, double position alcohol stove and oven on gimbals. On starboard, opposite the galley is the fridge / freezer, bar cupboard and wet locker.
• Saloon area. A double leaf table can accommodate 6-8 people. Both port and starboard saloon settees include lee cloths and convert into comfortable berths. An elevated pilot berth is located behind and above the starboard settee. The saloon area features numerous cupboards, drawers and storage behind and under the settees. X2 deck hatches and x4 air box vents ensure a good ventilation of the saloon.
• Head. A door leads to the head with a basin / shower, toilet and cupboard on port, and a dressing table / cupboard on starboard. X2 deck hatches ventilate this area.
• Fore double cabin. A watertight door gives access to the forepeak double cabin which includes a large deck hatch. The anchor chains are stored under the berths, via the x2 hawse pipes.
