[Der Begriff Segelyacht steht im modernen Sprachgebrauch für ein Segelboot, das über jene zwei konstruktiven Merkmale verfügt: Als Ballastanteil dient ein Kiel – dabei kann es sich auch um einen Schwenkkiel, Hubkiel, Langkiel, Kurzkiel oder einen Doppelkiel (Kimmkieler) handeln – und es weist bewohnbare Räumlichkeiten unter Deck auf. Im Gegensatz zu einer Jolle und einer Wanderjolle, die lediglich über ein Schwert und keinen Ballastanteil in Form einen Kiels verfügen. Die Wanderjolle, wie das Folkeboot, kann über eine kleine Kajüte verfügen. Ein weiterer Unterschied liegt darin, dass die Segelyacht aufgrund ihres Ballastanteils nicht kentern kann, jedoch sinken. Die Jolle kann kentern, dank genügend Auftriebskörper allerdings nicht sinken. Den Hilfsmotor stellt nicht zwangsweise ein Einbaudiesel mit Saildrive oder starrer Welle dar. Auch Aussenbordmotoren im Schacht oder am Heck der Segelyacht montiert, sind möglich. Bei der Segelyacht erfolgt der hauptsächliche Antrieb über die Segel. In der Hauptsache Vorsegel (Genua, Fock), Grosssegel sowie je nach Windeinfall auch Blister, Gennacker und Spi. Im europäischen Raum zählen die Länder Frankreich, Deutschland sowie die skandinavischen Länder zu den führenden Herstellern von Segelyachten.
