Moottoripurjehtijat ovat merenkulun hybridejä. Moottoripurtena pidetään venettä, joka on rakenteeltaan purjeveneen kaltainen, mutta takila ja sen myötä purjeiden pinta-ala on mittasuhteiltaan pienempi. Sen sijaan jokaisesta moottoripurjehtijasta löytyy yksi tai kaksi vahvaa dieselmoottoria. Purjeiden tarkoitus onkin tukea moottorivoimaa. Moottoripurjehtijat eivät näin ole vaativia purjeveneitä vaan purjeveneeksi naamioituja hitaita moottorialuksia. Yksi moottoripurren etu on yleensä hyvin tilava kannen alus. Varsinkin vähätuulisilla alueilla moottoripursi on elementissään voimakkaine moottoreineen. Sitä vastoin myrskyssä pieni purjeiden pinta-ala on turvallisuuden tae.
