Developed exclusively for defense use, the Mercury OptiMax Diesel outboard engine is now available for the most demanding boaters. With a 3.0L V6 configuration, 180 hp per engine and an advanced two-stage direct injection system, this engine offers a unique combination of power, efficiency and durability.
Unusual design for a marine diesel.
The setup is unusual for a marine diesel as it is a spark ignition engine - the fuel is ignited by a spark plug like in a gasoline engine - instead of the usual compression ignition used in most diesel engines. This makes the engine easier to maintain and reduces the need for additional mechanic training.
