Welcome aboard The Impossible Machine.

Originally launched in 1966, this classic wooden sailing vessel was designed by Kurt Oehlman and built at the Louw & Halvorsen shipyard in Cape Town, South Africa, to be used as a training vessel for the South African Navy.

In 2020, her current owner commissioned a major refit, transforming her into the proud ocean voyager she is today. The refit included extensive mechanical, structural, and rigging upgrades, and in 2022 her topsides and antifoul were renewed, completing her rejuvenation.

This extensive refit prepared her for the adventure of a lifetime — sailing from South Africa to Brazil to compete in the 2023 Cape to Rio Race. At the helm was her owner, Ard Matthews, renowned South African musician, songwriter, and lead vocalist of the band Just Jinjer, who then continued his voyage north to the Caribbean.

In recent years, The Impossible Machine has also served as a sailing and yacht-training platform for the Paper Boat Academy, offering aspiring mariners the skills and experience to launch careers in the yachting industry.

Varata originariamente nel 1966, questa classica barca a vela in legno è stata progettata da Kurt Oehlman e costruita presso il cantiere navale Louw & Halvorsen di Città del Capo, in Sudafrica, per essere utilizzata come nave scuola dalla Marina sudafricana.

Nel 2020, il suo attuale proprietario ha commissionato un importante refitting, trasformandola nella fiera navigatrice oceanica che è oggi. Il refitting ha incluso ampi aggiornamenti meccanici, strutturali e alle attrezzature, e nel 2022 sono state rinnovate le parti superiori dello scafo e la verniciatura antivegetativa, completando il suo rinnovamento.

Questo ampio refitting l’ha preparata per l’avventura di una vita: navigare dal Sudafrica al Brasile per partecipare alla Cape to Rio Race del 2023. Al timone c'era il suo proprietario, Ard Matthews, famoso musicista sudafricano, cantautore e voce solista della band Just Jinjer, che ha poi proseguito il suo viaggio verso nord, nei Caraibi.

Negli ultimi anni, The Impossible Machine è servita anche come piattaforma di formazione velica e nautica per la Paper Boat Academy, offrendo agli aspiranti marinai le competenze e l'esperienza necessarie per intraprendere una carriera nel settore nautico.
