[Ein Trimaran ist per Definition eine Segelyacht mit zwei seitlichen Schwimmern. Der Trimaran zählt wie der Katamaran zu den Mehrrumpfbooten, wobei beim Yacht-Katamaran beide Rümpfe als Wohn- und Lebensraum genutzt werden können. Beim Trimaran stellen die beiden seitlichen Rümpfe lediglich Auftriebskörper dar, die der Kränkungsstabilität dienen. Traditionelle Auslegerboote dienten dem Trimaran als Vorbild. Ein Vorteil des Trimarans stellt seine „aufrechte“ Gangart dar. Im Gegensatz zur Königsklasse, dem Einrumpf Boot oder Monohull gleitet der Trimaran, wie auch der Katamaran ohne Krängung über das Wasser. Mit einem wesentlich höheren Geschwindigkeitspotential wie die Monohull Segelyacht. In Europa konnte sich der Trimaran nicht durchsetzen. Der Grund liegt in der enormen Breite der Konstruktion, die oftmals mehr Raum als zwei vergleichbare Einrumpfboote einnimmt. Dies resultiert in den üblichen Yachthäfen unserer Breiten in überhöhten Liegeplatzgebühren, wenn überhaupt Liegeplätze für diesen Yacht Typ zur Verfügung stehen. Um diesem Problem entgegen zu treten, wurden in den letzten 20 Jahren einige Trimaran Modelle auf den Markt gebracht, die ihre seitlichen Schwimmer über ein variables Verstrebungssystem an den Hauptrumpf heranziehen können. Durchgesetzt haben sich aber auch diese Trimarane nicht und stellen nach wie vor ein Nischenprodukt dar. Mehr Akzeptanz findet der Trimaran in Revieren, in denen der Heimathafen ein Ankerplatz ist oder Bojenfeld darstellt.]
