Käsite urheiluvene tulee vapaa-ajan veneilystä. Urheiluveneinä voidaan pitää veneitä, jotka käyvät polttomoottorin avulla. Urheiluveneitä ovat myös ne veneet, jotka käyvät tehokkailla sähkömoottoreilla tai hybrideillä. Niinpä sana "urheilu" ei veneilyssä viittaa ruumiilliseen suoritukseen vaan nopeuteen. Erityisen harhauttava on tässä yhteydessä käsite urheiluvenesatama. Toisin kuin voisi olettaa, ei urheiluvenesatamassa ole vain urheiluveneitä vaan myös purjeveneitä. Muuttuneiden vapaa-ajanviettotapojen vuoksi on urheiluvene noussut suosituimmuudessa purjeveneen rinnalle. Urheiluvene tarjoaa useimmiten enemmän mukavuuksia, on nopeammin käyttövalmis ja helpompi käyttää.
