Dehler

They were once the flagship shipyard of German yacht building. After a number of economically difficult years, Dehler Yachts was taken over by Hanse Yachts. Since then, the yard has once again been impressing with innovative, functional and, above all, fast performance cruisers – and one racer.

Performance and Comfort

Originally, Willi Dehler and his brother Heinz planned to build caravans from "GRP", a plastic that was still new at the time. But from an early plastics trade fair, Willi Dehler returned with 50 orders for the construction of small sailing dinghies named "Winnetou" and "Pfeil S" – and it was no coincidence, as Willi Dehler was already a passionate sailor and water sports enthusiast back then.
In 1966, Dehler launched a small yacht that the brand would be identified with for decades: the Varianta. Thanks to its great sales success, Dehler consistently expanded its model range in the years that followed: Optima, Delanta, Sprinta and Duetta are models whose names are still mentioned in the same breath as "innovation and progress" in series yacht building.

Success on the Race Course

Racing success with Dehler yachts (a selection): Olympic gold medal in the 470 (Hübner/Bode) – for several years, Dehler built distinctive versions (yellow and orange deck with black stripes) of the Olympic 470 trapeze sailing dinghy. The Sprinta Sport became the world's first IOR one-design class. Dehler's son Karl steered the db2 (three-quarter tonner) to the production world championship title in 1984.
With the Dehler 30 OD, Dehler has been taking on the racer market since 2020. The boat is designed for shorthanded regatta sailing and is intended to become established as a one-design class. For the 2024 Olympics, the Dehler 30 OD (project management: Karl Dehler) was one of the candidate yachts in the newly created Mixed Offshore Racing category.

Ups and Downs

During the recession of the early 1990s, the yard ran into economic difficulties despite its continuing convincing boat concepts. In 1998, Dehler filed for insolvency. Over the following 12 years under various Dutch owners, the yard still put good and successful yachts on the water, designed by the renowned design office Judel/Vrolijk. Economically, however, the yard recovered only slowly.
In 2009, Hanse Yachts AG took over the Dehler shipyard. From then on, larger Dehler models were built in Greifswald. In 2012, the yard relocated to Greifswald entirely, where six models from 29 to 46 feet in length are built to this day (as of 2020).

Dehler yachts have received the "boat of the year" award several times.
