Until just a few years ago, the term small boat was used almost exclusively for smaller boats that mostly served as tenders or dinghies (alternative spellings: dinghi or dingi). Today, however, small boats also include paddle boats and inflatable boats, canoes, fishing boats and similar craft up to a size of roughly four to five meters. In current usage, jet skis are also increasingly referred to as small boats.
In water sports, tenders are boats that are mostly carried on or by larger sailing yachts or motor yachts. Their main purpose is to bring passengers or crew ashore and back again from a yacht lying at anchor, on a buoy or in a roadstead. Tenders are also used for excursions.
Tenders are mainly powered by combustion or electric motors, and less often rowed by several people. Some tenders can also be sailed.
On very large yachts, tenders are used for maneuvers such as weighing anchor or berthing in tight marinas (inflatable boat). In nautical language, these boats are also called tenders.
By definition, a dinghy (also spelled dinghi or dingi) is a small tender that can be handled by one person (usually with oars or a small outboard motor). Dinghies rarely have room for more than two to four people.
Tenders and dinghies are either hung from a yacht's davits, stowed in special tender garages in the hull on large yachts, or secured on deck. On older yachts or cruising yachts, tenders or dinghies are sometimes towed along in the wake.
Tenders and dinghies are built from a variety of materials. The classic dinghy is made of wood and moved with oars. Materials more commonly used today are GRP, aluminum and carbon. Inflatable boats are now the most widespread type of tender. They take up less space on board, are comparatively light and can easily come alongside, lie alongside and be beached.
Due to US and Australian influence, the term "dinghy" is also used in water sports for certain sailing dinghies (mainly racing dinghies).
