Lagoon

If you want to sail upright – and therefore without heeling, in comfort and, above all, fast – you need a catamaran. Obvious, really! Among cruising catamarans built for blue-water sailing and long-distance voyages, Lagoon has been a leading name for decades.

There was a time when long-distance and blue-water sailors avoided fast catamarans like the plague. Only a few decades ago, it was a matter of course that cruising sailors who let themselves be seduced by the speed of a catamaran had to sleep in one of the two hulls. And since these were – for the sake of speed – very narrow and low, cruising under sail on two hulls was considered the most masochistic form of blue-water sailing there was.

Building bridges

That changed at the latest when the French shipyard, or rather the concept and design office, Lagoon was founded in 1984. As a subsidiary of the “racing division” at volume manufacturer Jeanneau, Lagoon brought the brightest and most innovative minds onto its team. With a single premise: to make cruising under sail on catamarans as comfortable and rewarding as possible.
They achieved this with a simple but fundamental idea: instead of making the space between the two hulls “sportily” walkable with a net and literally bridging it, they built a genuine bridge from one hull to the other. On it, in turn, they housed the cabin, the cockpit and everything else a cruising sailor's heart desires. A catamaran as a deck saloon yacht – in hindsight an obvious idea. Back then, however, revolutionary …

Market leader

The concept was an instant hit. At first, cruising catamarans for private owners such as the Lagoon 47, 55, 57 and 67 left the yard; later, the Lagoon 37 and 42 models were designed specifically for the charter market. Larger, even more comfortable and luxurious models followed for both groups of buyers.
Today Lagoon is part of the CNB Group within the Beneteau conglomerate, is the third-largest production boat yard in the world and the undisputed international market leader for cruising catamarans. More than 350 of these luxury/comfort catamarans in all size classes leave the three production sites in Belleville sur Vie and Poiré sur Vie/Vendée department/France as well as Bordeaux (custom builds) every year.

Model ranges for owners and charter

This is how Lagoon describes itself: "All Lagoon designs come from Van Peteghem/Lauriot Prévost, a design office that has won more regattas with its multihulls than any other design firm. Reliable, innovative, fast, straightforward, comfortable at sea and at anchor, with a 360° panorama in the saloon and plenty of light in the cabins: Lagoon's cruising catamarans form a complete, coherent model range that adapts individually to any cruising itinerary. With 78 dealers in 47 countries, they enjoy individual service and competent local support worldwide."
Is there anything left to add? Exactly!
