Rowing boats are used for a variety of purposes today and are therefore offered in many different designs and materials. Originally, the boat was made of wood, as were the oars and the rudder with tiller used to steer it. Modern rowing boats are made from wood composite, laminated plastics (GRP), and molded plastics. Besides being used as leisure boats, rowing boats are also used in sport. Depending on the transom design, a rowing boat can be fitted with a small motor. Alternatively, a small sailing rig with a sail can be installed on some rowing boats.
