She was Built in 1881 at the
prestigious Royal System
Yacht Yard, cementing its
legacy as a classic ocean
cruiser/racer and designed
to RORC Class III rule.
Aage Utzons design is
celebrated for its
elegance, seaworthiness,
and timeless appeal. Thick fiberglass construction from the early days of fiberglass boatbuilding ensures
unmatched durability. With a long keel, it offers excellent stability and sails beautifully on the
open ocean.
I am fortunate to have been the 4th owner of this 45 year old beauty of a ship. She has been given a great deal of care, time and effort over the decades by all of her previous captains, who made her the ship she is today.
Long story short; I sailed Saga from Denmark to the Canary Islands over a period of +/- 5 years. In 2023 she received a refit in the boatyard of Amsterdam. Here the underwater ship got stripped back to core and a new firm epoxy coat got applied. In 2023 the gearbox got replaced, a self steering wind vane (bouvaan) got installed, together with a hard dodger made of of plywood and fiberglass, fresh deckfittings and seals, solarpanels got mounted as well as a a handful of cleats, a manual anchorwinch with a 14kg cobra anchor with 60 meters of chain, a certified offshore Liferaft,... later on the entire electrical system got rewired and batteries renewed. In short, she now is a fine balance between old school sailing and modern day technology. The Sagitta 30 is bermuda rigged, simple single line slap reefing (currently with 2 reefing points but I recommend adding a third one) all halyards at the mast. Furl reefing for the Jib/Genoa. She is equipped with a solid working Jib in used condition ( some small repairs done ) and a lighter 130% Genoa in really good condition. The main has had small tears that got repaired, still in shape to add a few thousand miles.
new antifouling done in february 2026.
Saga has a really cosy and spacious, two cabin layout. Starting with the the fore cabin where a vee berth easily sleeps 2 people, a lot of storage is to be found underneath. Followed by and electrical head to the port side, opposite the head is a clothing locker. The main cabin with a wide bunk/sofa on port and a long galley on starboard, followed by a chart table/nav station. There are two pilot berths one on the port side and one on starboard but I mainly used these for storing tools and spares, etc. The main saloon has 6'4" (193cm) head room! We managed to squeeze 5 people on board before, but I would say that it’s a comfortable boat for 3 sailors that get on. But an absolute dream for the single handed sailor or a couple.
The electrical system consists of separate 2 house battery banks (2023) and one starting battery for the engine (2023) . All is wired on a simple 12v system, with usb sockets, but there is also a 3500 watt inverter. The Garmin plotter (GPSmap 721xs) is equipped with a ais receiver (true heading) , and a wifi network to send ais position of other ships to your phone or tablet on navionics/etc. Raymarine VHF radio, navigation lights, and a fridge that I never wired :) She has 110 watt solar juicing up the batteries devided over 3 separate panels (with victron mppts.)
Saga has a solid BMC4 cilinder 1,5 liter diesel 36hp. Old but very powerfull and reliable, never let me down. Has been well maintained, had quite recently a new heath exchanger and revised gearbox, new alternator ( i ve burned the fuses whilst installing it so this needs replacement )
2 burner alcohol stove ( and separate single stove gas backup )
Epoxy water tank 80 liters ( space for extra 100l flexible tank )
Lazy Jacks and Bag ( needs restitching )
Furling for stay
Self Steering Windvane (Bouwvaan)
Main anchor : Kobra 14kg
2nd anchor CQR 15kg
3rd anchor spade 8kg
60m chain, 50 m (solid) anchor line
35m spare chain
Manual windless
15 meter 30 amp shore power cord
horn, life jackets, flairs, etc
(2) 2-speed Barlow 26winches
(1)2 speed lewmar 16 at the mast
Many cleats also midship
Radar reflector
Plenty of tools, spares, bits and bobs
Bow truster
raymarine st2000+ (to be repaired)
it’s with tears in my eyes that I am selling this boat... She is in overall good shape, and with a few additions in starting blocks for Atlantic crossing, azores, Senegal,... Saga is currently moored in Puerto la Estaca, El Hierro (Canary Islands ) this is a very well-protected and affordable port paid uptill june. I am not in a rush, just want to find the captain she deserves.
I have a filmrol of photo’s, YouTube video’s , magazine covers, plenty of stories to tell... reach out to my email adress or whatsapp if you want more info. ############@icloud.com or +32 456 243258
