Notes
1980 Malö 40H, NOK 200,000
Malö 40 from Malö Yachts (31 ft, 1980 model) for sale after several years of bluewater cruising.
This is a solid and well-proven sailing yacht with a long keel and robust fiberglass hull, known for excellent seaworthiness and high stability. The boat has sailed from Norway via Asia and across the Indian Ocean, proving to be a reliable platform for extended offshore passages in varying conditions.
The boat is well equipped for long-distance cruising, including an extensive sail inventory, upgraded electrical system with lithium batteries and a 200W solar panel, AIS, VHF, and multiple independent communication systems, as well as a windvane self-steering system. The engine is a Beta Marine 35 hp (2015), regularly maintained and upgraded in recent years.
During our ownership, several key upgrades and maintenance works have been carried out: new antifouling (2026), new mainsail (2026), new cutless bearing (2026), Starlink installation (2026), new lithium batteries (2025), major electrical system upgrade with new wiring (2025), new MPPT regulator (2025), gearbox overhaul (2025), freshwater tank cleaning (2025), new dinghy outboard (2025), and rig inspection (2025).
Due to contaminated diesel during a stay in Indonesia, an additional 65-liter diesel tank was installed (2025). This was implemented as a practical solution given time and facility constraints, as cleaning the original ~200-liter tank was not feasible at the time. The system has since proven reliable in operation. Total available diesel capacity is approximately 310 liters, in addition to the original tank which is currently not in use.
The boat has good long-range capacity, with up to approximately 300 liters of freshwater, as well as practical storage solutions throughout.
The rig was replaced in 2018, with standing rigging renewed in 2025. The sail inventory includes several sails in good condition, including a newer genoa (2022), as well as storm and light-wind sails.
The center cockpit layout provides a safe and well-protected cockpit, and the aft cabin has a separate entrance, offering increased comfort and privacy onboard.
We have typically been 4 people onboard but have also sailed with up to 7 people on trips.
The boat has been well maintained and upgraded during our ownership. As with any boat of this age, some ongoing maintenance should be expected.
She is easy to handle and well suited for couples or small crews.
The boat is currently located in the Maldives, with plans to sail towards the east coast of Africa within approximately two months. If a buyer prefers a different delivery or location arrangement, we are flexible and open to discussion.
It may also be possible to agree on a handover arrangement where the buyer takes over the boat through a delivery or charter-style agreement, for example sailing her to the Caribbean or Europe by prior agreement.
