Outstanding Electric World‑Cruiser “Ya” – A Fossil‑Free Sailing Legend

For sale: Ya, a one‑of‑a‑kind, fully electric sailing yacht designed by Dick Koopmans and built as the world’s first fossil‑free sailing yacht intended for global cruising. This is not just a boat – it’s a proven, energy‑neutral, ocean‑class cruiser that has sailed thousands of miles around the planet without any diesel or gas.

A truly electric, zero‑fossil cruiser

Ya is powered entirely by two electric motors (6.5 kW each) driving highly efficient Autoprop propellers, which can also act as alternators while sailing to charge the batteries.
Her energy comes from:
  • Solar panels on deck and bimini, designed to generate power even in the tropics.
  • A wind turbine mast‑mounted above 7 m for consistent wind‑based charging.
  • Hydro‑generation via the Autoprops and motors at sailing speeds of 5 knots or more, turning propulsion into energy.

Thanks to a large Lithium‑iron‑phosphate battery bank (40 kWh), Ya can motor for about 48 hours at 2 knots on electric power alone, plus she recharges continuously while sailing, anchoring, and at moorings.

Comfortable, sustainable offshore design

Koopmans’ design philosophy meets real‑world offshore cruising in Ya, with:
  • 10.10 m LOA, 3.96 m beam, and a centerboard giving a draft of 0.70 m (up) / 2.70 m (down) – ideal for exploring shallow anchorages and open ocean alike.
  • Ocean‑rated CE Category A and a lightweight, insulated hull built from foam‑core glass/vinylester
  • Spacious living aboard
  • Carbon masts that reduces weight aloft and the need for ballast, making her lively and responsive under sail.
  • An exra 11cm of PIR Foam, giving her insulation comparable to a well-insulated house.

Shared spaces are bright and airy thanks to the wide beam of the ship, the headroom of 1.90 to 2.00 meter and the large hull windows, which flood the interior with natural light and even capture useful low‑angle sun heat, significantly reducing the need for auxiliary heating.

Energy‑smart systems and living onboard

Ya is a masterclass in energy‑efficient living at sea:
  • Induction cooker, microwave, well‑insulated 55‑L fridge/freezer, and a double‑insulated electric water cooker that uses a fraction of the energy of gas‑burner‑based systems.
  • A clever “hay box” and bread‑baking machine that cut cooking energy use by up to 80%, while keeping the galley safe and gas‑free.
  • LED lighting and low‑consumption electronics, including a broadband radar using only a fraction of the power of a conventional radar.

A clear BMS/Studer‑based power‑electronics display shows energy in and out in simple watts, making it easy for owners and guests to stay within the boat’s energy balance and enjoy truly fossil‑free cruising.

A proven offshore world‑cruising yacht

Ya was conceived as a demonstration yacht for sustainable, offshore sailing and has already completed a circumnavigation without fossil fuels, currently making a second tour around the world.
She has been featured at Dutch boat shows, sailing magazines, Dutch TV and in the International Maritime Museum Rotterdam, proving that a modern, fully electric sailing yacht can be both practical and seaworthy for long‑distance cruising.

Her design and systems are documented in detail on www.fossilfreearoundtheworld.org, including energy‑balance calculations, technical drawings, and real‑world sailing reports.

Why “Ya” is the future of sailing

If you’re looking for a unique, offshore‑capable, zero‑fossil sailboat that combines:
  • A Koopmans‑designed, efficient hull and rig,
  • A fully electric, self‑recharging energy system,
  • And thoughtful, spacious energy‑conscious living spaces that make fossil‑free cruising comfortable and intuitive,

Ya is one of the most special and forward‑thinking yachts available today. She offers a rare opportunity to own a true pioneer of sustainable, electric sailing – a boat that has already proven her concept around the world.

Currently she is sailing in Indonesia, final destination probably Portugal.

Wish of the owner is that the new owners would continue the practice and the communication about fossil free and sustainable sailing, through the website, magazines and other media.
