Aquanaut

A Frisian shipyard with plenty of history

Aquanaut is a Dutch shipyard based in Sneek that has been building motor yachts since 1961. The company was founded by brothers Johan and Wim Bakker, and was later headed by Mark Bakker and Geert Leenstra. In Friesland, right in the middle of one of the classic Dutch watersports regions, a yard emerged that has built a solid reputation over decades for steel motor yachts.

Steel instead of hot air

Technically, Aquanaut is clearly positioned: the yard stands for steel yachts, usually with a displacement hull or a restrained semi-displacement character – certainly not for anything hectic or high-speed. Aquanaut boats aren't meant to impress with speed, but with seakeeping, substance, good use of space and relaxed cruising qualities. This approach makes a lot of sense, especially in European inland waters, on canals, rivers and coastal routes.

A lot of shipyard under one roof

An important aspect at Aquanaut is the yard's depth of in-house production. Design, construction and fit-out largely take place under the yard's direction and under one roof. With smaller to mid-sized Dutch yards in particular, this is THE mark of quality, because it ties design, hull construction, interior fit-out and later service work more closely together. The yard's profile today fits that picture as well, with new builds, refits and service.

From Vripack to a signature of its own

Early Aquanaut designs came straight from the circle around Vripack and Dick Boon. Later, the yard added design elements of its own, among others through in-house designer Jan-Piet Bakker. He belongs to the second Bakker generation of the shipyard family and is a grandson of the founders. That explains why older and newer Aquanaut yachts share the same “character traits” yet don't all look alike: the yard has developed its design language further over the years without abandoning its basic technical concept.

Drifter, Voyager, Privilege, Hommage

Today, Aquanaut lists four large model families: Drifter, Voyager, Privilege and Hommage. Logically, each has its own focus – from classic, homely aft-cabin motor yachts to versions designed more for travelling and living aboard, through to more representative boats with a higher level of fit-out. Historically, the Andante series was also important; its Andante 438 OC was described in the trade press as an “unusually versatile European motor yacht”: a mix of open cockpit boat, trawler styling and a raised helm station.

Engineering with European waters in mind

Other specialist publications describe the Drifter 1300, for example, as a multi-chine yacht with a generous interior and a draft suited to cruising. On the Andante 438 OC, a raised second helm station with a retractable hardtop was highlighted, along with an efficient displacement hull shape with a tapered bow and flatter aft sections, said to favor range at moderate speeds. That is typical Aquanaut: no spectacular shipyard technology to show off, but solutions in the details.

What the yard stands for

Aquanaut is therefore not a yard for buyers looking for top performance or spectacular design. It is far more interesting for owners who want a Dutch steel motor yacht with a certain tradition: solidly built, often with an aft cabin or open cockpit, comfortable in its fit-out and clearly designed for European waters. On the used boat market in particular, that makes for an appealing niche.
