MODESTY BLAISE is a 40 Square Metre Boat/Skerrycriser designed by swedish naval architect and boat builder Knut Holm and built 1917 in Gamleby at the east coast of Sweden.
After ten years in America, where Holm became familiar with modern boat building methods at the then leading Herreshoff yard, he startet his own boatyard in 1908. In his Gamleby yard, later managed by his sons, more than 700 boats were built until 1947. As talented sailor, Holm (1864 - 1938) was one of Swedens leading yachtsmen and a major competitor of Gustaf A. Estlander. Born and living in the gamleby village Holm stood up to wealthy clients and sailors from Stockholm. Only limited workforce limited the annual output of Holm designed and Gamleby constructed boats.
Besides recent attemps to document this remarkable chapter of swedish boat building and local history ”Modesty Blaise” is a fine example of Holms work, now 106 years old.
Modesty Blaise with sail number S 94 still keeps her original name. 12,60 m long and 2,10 m wide she is a not yet extremely streched square metre boat as it became the trend later.
Her deckhouse with rounded coachroof (a shape providing more, 140 cm) headroom and the coamings in front of the cabin surrounding the mast are charming. As can be seen on the fotos the wooden superstructure is protected from UV-light by a tailored tarpaulin. One of many details showing the care that ”Modesty Blaise” obtained by her current owner.
Thanks to thoughtful ownership, a thoroughly executed foresighted restoration 2005 - 6 and again 2015 - 17 major work has been done for decades to come. Please note the fotos with stainless steel ribs and floor space incorporated into the hull.
Now it is time to find a new owner for ”Modesty Blaise” who understands the historic value, appreciates the charme and take care of her. Note the interiour with shelves and rails in 1917 manner. There are alltogether four bunks, two 190 cm long, two 205 cm.
Since 2017 Rexwinkel Jachtbouw takes care in Numansdorp (The Netherlands) with professional annual preservation, sanding the hull and refreshing the glossy finish regularly on beharf of the caring owner. The boat is located south of Rotterdam at Hollands Diep.
She can be sailed singlehanded as being done by current owner. Careful adjustments of the deck hardware were made to enable this while adhering to the style of the vintage boat.
”Modesty Blaise” is a composite construction with some frames being metal, some wood. Rib # 10, approx 225 cm from the stern shows signs of corrosion. This can be adjusted by sanding a little and a small paint job, to be done end of the season.
Due to approx weight of 2800 kg and the narrow hull, transport of Modesty Blaise to a new location and other waters for cruising or holidays is easy.
