What does it mean to you to be sailing for Alinghi and defending the America’s Cup?
“It means a lot to me, it’s a good team to be with and it’s a great opportunity.”
Alinghi clearly still has what it takes to win. In your opinion, what elements of the team set it apart from the rest?
“We have a lot of talented people here but I think what makes the biggest difference is our ability to work together, and our ability to get the best out of everybody. You can put lots of talented people together but the real trick is to get them to gel together, work as a team and achieve more than they could as individuals.”
Can you describe the physical and mental demands that racing at this level has on you?
“Physically we have our tough days but my biggest problem is I can’t control my appetite! Mentally you have to be on top of things. If your head is in the clouds you screw up and then you screw it up for everyone else and waste everyone’s time.”
What do you think will be going through your head when you are lying in bed the night before the Match?
“I will be thinking about spot checking the sandwiches to make sure they have good fillings!”
Describe your role on the boat and how it could make or break the outcome of a race and essentially affect whether or not Alinghi retains the Cup.
“I’m a grinder and the key to grinding is being alert. If you are not paying attention and the sails don’t move, the trimmers can’t trim the way they want to - it’s important to know what’s going on.”
